ADRA Nepal works in Nepal since 1987 with the people in poverty and distress with diversified portfolio focusing on health, economic development, food security and emergency management with gender, good governance, education, environment, human rights and peace building as cross cutting issues. Enhancing Livelihoods of Smallholder Farmers in Central Terai Districts of Nepal (ELIVS) is a livelihood project of ADRA Nepal aimed to enhance livelihoods of 30,000 smallholder famers of central terai districts of Nepal. ADRA Nepal in joint collaboration with International Development Enterprise (iDE) Nepal and Forum for Rural Welfare and Agricultural Reform for Development (FORWARD) Nepal will be implementing project interventions in Bara, Rautahat, Sarlahi and Mahottari districts. This project directly will contribute towards millennium development goals 1 i.e. to end extreme poverty and hunger and partly also contributes in MDG 3 i.e. gender equality and women empowerment. The project will assist government in many key MDG 1 and MDG 3-related steps as recommended in the Nepal MDG progress report 2013, including a) reducing disparities across social groups, b) investing in food production and food security, agriculture modernization and attracting educated youth, c) engaging the private sector to take the lead in employment generation, d) women adult literacy programmes, e) increasing women’s participation in training and employment opportunities, and f) engaging men in activities designed to eliminate socio-cultural discrimination against women and promote gender quality and women's empowerment. Main theme of this project is to substantially increase incomes of target families, empower women and disadvantaged caste/ethnic groups through market development approach designed for Nepal’s weak market, developing pro-poor value chains in goat and vegetable sub-sectors. Inputs comprise of improved animal management of goats and vegetables especially lentils in this project and increase overall agricultural production creating pocket areas and enhance marketing of those products.
